This trail begins at the northernmost point of the Pinhoti trail along Highway 278 and continues south to the Terrapin Creek Watershed. This trail takes you over the top of Oakey Mountain.
This trail has 3 distinct up and down sections that are very demanding.
In the summer of 2006, this trail was extremely overgrown. After Lanie Gap, the trail became extremely narrow and at times hard to find. If it were not for the frequent blazes we might have lost the trail several times. The trail was so narrow that trekking poles were unusable much of the time and there were many deadfalls that had to be gone over, around, or under.
Water is extremely scarce on this section. You should refill whenever possible. Currently there is a bad drought in the area and the only area possible is the Terrapin Creek Watershed and Terrapin Creek where it is crossed by the rail trail. Accessing the creek is difficult, but you should do it if you are at all low on water. The watershed is easily accessed.
